The embassy does not issue formal application acknowledgements or status updates. Please do not call or email for status checks or confirmation of application receipt. The Embassy of India in Santiago has jurisdiction over entire territory of Chile. OCI applications are accepted only from applicants residing within the Embassy’s jurisdiction. Those who are not residing in the jurisdiction of this Embassy may contact the Indian Embassy / High Commission / Consulate General having jurisdiction over the area of their residence.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

1. Physical printing of OCI Card has been discontinued effective from July 2026. Now applicant will receive E-OCI which can be downloaded directly from the OCI Portal under E-OCI Tab after logging into OCI Portal

2. Applicant has to bring all the documents in original along with application for verification and recording biometric. No applications sent by post will be accepted for processing.

IMPORTANT INTRODUCTION and INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE APPLYING FOR NEW E-OCI

Eligibility for registration as E-OCI holder:

In keeping with Government of India’s commitment to fulfilling the aspirations and expectations of ‘Overseas Indians’, Overseas Citizenship of India scheme was introduced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955 in August 2005, granting certain privileges to the foreigners of Indian origin for travelling to and staying in India, acquiring property in India and in certain financial, economic and educational matters. It is however clarified that the Constitution of India does not allow for “dual citizenship” and OCI must not be mistaken as “dual citizenship” of India.

A.       Following categories of foreign nationals are eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cardholder:

(a)      Any person of full age and capacity:

(i)       who is a citizen of another country, but was a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after the commencement of the Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950; or

(ii)       who is a citizen of another country, but was eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of the commencement of the Constitution i.e. on 26.01.1950; or

(iii)      who is a citizen of another country, but belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947; or

(iv)      who is a child or a grandchild or a great grandchild of such a citizen; or

(b)      A person, who is a minor child of a person mentioned in (a) above; or

(c)      A person, who is a minor child, and whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parents is a citizen of India; or

(d)      Spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of an Overseas Citizen of India Cardholder registered under section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and whose marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the application.

B.       Following categories of foreign nationals are NOT eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) holder:

a. Who or either of whose parents or grandparents or great grandparents is or had been a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify.

b. Foreign Military/Police personnel either serving or retired.

C.  Benefits of E-OCI:

E-OCI holders are entitled to:

• Multiple-entry multi-purpose life-long visa to visit India (Special approval is required for research, mountaineering, missionary activities, journalism and to visit Restricted / Protected Areas).

• Exemption from reporting to police authorities / FRRO for any length of stay in India; equality with NRIs in certain financial, economic and educational matters except for acquisition of agricultural or plantation land and in matters pertaining to inter-country adoption of Indian children.

• Equality with domestic Indian in entry to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and in matter of tariffs in air fares in domestic sectors in India.

• Eligible for grant of Indian citizenship under Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 after completion of 5 years as E-OCI holder, provided he has resided in India for one year out of 5 years before making the application.

• E-OCIholders are now also eligible to enrol in the National Pension Scheme (NPS) at par with Non-Resident Indians.

• However, E-OCI holders do not have any voting rights and are not eligible for election to Union Parliament or State Legislatures or for holding Constitutional posts such as President, Vice President, Judges of Supreme Court / High Court etc. or to hold any Public Office under the Union or any of the State Governments.

D.      An E-OCI holder has to update the E-OCI each time a new passport is issued irrespective of age. For this purpose, the E-OCI holder has to upload a copy of the new passport containing the photo of the passport holder and also a latest photo on the online system under OCI Miscellaneous services. These documents may be uploaded by the E-OCI holder within three months of receipt of the new passport.

• Status is updated on Real Time Basis, please do not call for status check as there is no fast/Tatkal service for OCI.

• "Surrender of Indian Passport is mandatory before applying for OCI". "Kindly do not apply OCI and Surrender of Indian passport application together". For those applicants who have at any time held an Indian passport, and if your Indian passport is not yet cancelled then please apply for cancellation of your Indian passport as per guidelines.

• Applicant should be present in Chile at the time of applying and at the time of collecting the E-OCI. An applicant who has travelled to India on a visa after applying for E-OCI should leave India before expiry of the said visa.  OCI will be delivered at the country of applying only.

• it is mandatory to upload and submit copies of original documents duly self-attested. The documents to be uploaded are Current Foreign passport, Cancelled Indian passport copy front and last page / Surrender certificate, Marriage certificate if Applicable. However, applicant has to bring all the documents in original along for verification and capturing of biometric.

• The Embassy may ask applicants for producing original documents for verification at any stage of processing of OCI application, if deemed necessary.

• In case of divorce/death of a foreign spouse, it is the responsibility of person of Indian origin on whose basis OCI was granted to the spouse, to immediately surrender the E-OCI of the divorced/deceased spouse.

1. How to apply: 

• Please read the instructions carefully before applying to avoid any mistakes. Refer the checklist and the sample application form before applying for service

• No handwritten application for registration as E-OCI holder or for OCI miscellaneous service will be accepted or processed. Only one set of application and documents needs to be sent.

• Please use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer browsers.

• Furnishing wrong information and suppression of material information will result in rejection of application/cancellation of E-OCI if already issued and blacklisting of the person.

• Copies of all documents must be first duly self - attested and uploaded only after attestation. A document uploaded without attestation will not be considered valid.

• Applicant must complete online registration by filling-up online application form at the link https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome under “New OCI Registration”, uploading his/her photograph and signature, and all the mandatory documents duly self. No column in the application form should be left blank.

• In case of application for minors who cannot sign, thumb impression of the left hand must be uploaded and “Declaration” on the last page of the application form must be signed by both the parents in the column “signature of the applicant”.

• Specification guidelines for uploading of documents: The maximum size allowed for a document file is 500 kb. The document file must be in PDF format. (For sake of comparison, an A-4 size page document colour scanned at 100 dots per inch resolution will generate a file of about 200-250 kb.) Each category of document must be uploaded in a single file.

• Kindly be ready with Applicant's image and Applicant's signature image (Max size 500kb). The height and width of the Applicant Photo must be equal. The minimum dimensions are 200 pixels (width) x 200 pixels (height). The maximum dimensions are 1500 pixels (width) x 1500 pixels (height). The height and width of the Signature Photo must have aspect ratio 1:3. The minimum dimensions are 200 pixels (width) x 67 pixels (height). The maximum dimensions are 1500 pixels (width) x 500 pixels (height). Kindly be ready with supporting documents in PDF format (Max size 1000kb). NOTE: UPLOADING OF DOCUMENTS AS STATED IN THE DOCUMENT CHECKLIST IS A MUST. YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED AND RETURNED UNPROCESSED, IF YOU DON’T UPLOAD ALL THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS ON THE PORTAL.

• Print-out of duly filled Part A and Part B of online application. 

• Part B (declaration) of the OCI application form must be signed by either of the parents.

• Copy of self-Attested current Chilean / foreign passport of the applicant. Here self-attested means self-attested by both the parents.

• Birth Certificate: Copy of the birth certificate must be provided, if the applicant was born in the Chile. It must reflect (i) Names of Parents; (ii) Date of Birth. Birth certificates issued by hospitals are not acceptable. The document must be self-attested. For minor applicants, self-attested means self-attested by both the parents. The birth certificate must be apostilled and duly officially translated by the Chilean government. If the Child was born outside of Chile, then the Birth certificate apostilled and translated (if required) by that foreign government.

• Parent’s Marriage Certificate (Apostilled / authenticated by the Government of the country of issue if marriage is registered in a foreign country).

• Copies of Parents’ Indian Passports (first page, last page). Self -attested.

• If Indian origin parents have changed their nationality, copies of their Surrender Certificate or current E-OCIs or any other documents to prove their Indian origin must be submitted. If only one parent is of Indian origin, then submit copy of his Surrender Certificate or E-OCI and foreign passport of the other parent.

• Photograph and signature guidelines are mentioned above. The physical photo must be affixed on the physical application form and the digital photo must be uploaded on the OCI form online. Physical and uploaded photograph must be identical.

• Confirmation of fee payment of CLP 256.400.

• Parental Undertaking / Authorization for Minors (Children under 18 years old) For sample click HERE⁴. Both parents must sign the parental authorization form, which should be duly notarized. Signatures of the parents on OCI Application Form, their passports/ID proofs and parental authorization form must be identical. Mismatch of signatures will result in delay in processing the OCI application, which is also liable to be rejected.

• Proof of legal status of parents in the Chile (if holding non-Chilean passport) (the document must be self-attested). Please submit any one of the following documents: copy of valid RUT card – front and back, or copy of valid Chilean Visa or the copies of e-OCIs issued to parents, if ever obtained and available (the document must be self-attested).

3 B. Documents for Minor applicants (under 18 years of age) who held Indian passport earlier:

• Steps to Surrender Your Voter ID Online (Form-7 Submission)

Applicant may surrender his/her Voter ID online by submitting Form-7 through the official website of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Search Your Voter Details

Visit: https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in 

Enter your details to locate your voter record.

Step 2: Access Form-7

Go to: https://voters.eci.gov.in 

On the homepage, click on Form-7 to initiate the surrender process.

Step 3: Register/Login to Submit the Form

Visit: https://voters.eci.gov.in/login 

Create an account or log in using your credentials.

After logging in, fill out and submit Form-7 to request deletion or surrender of Voter ID.

After the above procedure proceed to OCI website:

• Copy of self-Attested current Chilean / foreign passport. 

• Copy of cancelled Indian passport (first and last page).

• Surrender Certificate of the Indian Passport of the applicant.

• Marriage Certificate (Apostilled /authenticated and translated by the Government of the country of issue if marriage is registered in a foreign country).

• Document evidence is required for divorce cases.

IMPORTANT: Foreign spouse of E-OCI holder is eligible to apply for OCI provided that the applicant’s marriage is registered and has subsisted for a continuous period of not less than 2 years immediately preceding the application. E-OCI under this category will be granted only after personal interview of both husband and wife.

4.  Where and how to send the application?

• After completing the online application, applicants must take a print out of Part A and Part B of the application, sign the application and send it along with self-attested copies/notarised where applicable of all mandatory documents as mentioned above in person only.

The Embassy of India will not accept any responsibility in case the courier is lost / misplaced / damaged or delayed.

• The applicant should use the courier service (with tracking facility) of their choice and are advised to keep the tracking numbers (for return courier as well) with them.

• Tracking numbers are useful to track the couriers, at both times, while sending the documents and while receiving the E-OCI-if the applicant arranges for the pick up.

  5. Checking status of the application:

• Kindly note that there is no urgent or fast track service for OCI. In case of an emergency please apply for relevant visa.

  6. Processing time:

• OCI applications received with complete documentation will be acknowledged within 3-5 working days.  After acknowledgement, the standard processing tentative time is appx. 40 working days (from the date of acknowledgement).

• However, this timeframe is only indicative, and, in some cases, which need approval of concerned authorities may take much longer & no fixed timeframe can be given for processing such application. For example, all the spouse based OCI applications are referred to Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India and therefore no timeframe can be given for such cases.

• All applicants are advised to make their travel plans / bookings only after the issue of E-OCI as no urgent /tatkal service is available for OCI application. In case of emergency, you may apply for visa even if your OCI application is being processed.

  7. Jurisdiction:
     The Embassy of India, Santiago has the Jurisdiction over Chilean Territory. The Embassy will be able to accept OCI applications only from those applicants who are present in its jurisdiction only. Those who are not residing in the jurisdiction of this Consulate may contact the Indian Embassy / High Commission / Consulate General having jurisdiction over the area of their residence.

• Are minor children eligible for E-OCI?
  => Yes.

• Do I have to fill all columns when filling up the application online?
  => Yes. It is mandatory to fill/answer all the column, and that no column is left unanswered.

• What documents need to be submitted along with the application? What documents would qualify for “any other proof” for evidence of self or parents or grandparents to be eligible for grant of OCI?
  => You may see the information provided above for the relevant category. 

• Can I submit my OCI application through an agent?
  => No. OCI application can be submitted either at the Counter of the Embassy of India, Santiago by the applicants in person only.

• What is the processing time of an OCI application?
  => In view of the fact that OCI applications are processed in consultation with concerned authorities in India, it takes tentative up to 45 days for processing an OCI application after the acknowledgement. Certain complex cases may take much longer time & no fixed timeframe can be given for processing them.  

• I / my child cannot sign; can we leave the signature box empty?
  => No. The signature box should not be left blank. Thumb impression of the left hand of the applicant should be provided in case the applicant cannot sign.

• How many copies of application have to be submitted?
  => Only one set of application has to be submitted for each applicant.

• Where can application be submitted?
  => Applications can be submitted in the Embassy of India, Santiago by applicants normally between 10.00 am to 12.30pm (Monday to Friday) except on Holidays. Kindly check the list of Official holidays. However, if the applicant is in India, he / she can apply with the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office. 

• Can foreign nationals who are married to E-OCI holders or married to persons of Indian origin eligible to apply for OCI?
  => Yes, provided that the marriage is continuing for at least two years immediately prior to making such an application. 

• Is a national of Pakistan or Bangladesh eligible for OCI?
  => No.

• Are ‘Empire of India’ passports issued by the British authorities in India prior to Indian Independence accepted as proof of Indian origin?
  => Such passports are acceptable only if they state the national status of the holder as a person of British Protectorate who is originally a citizen of a place in India. They are not acceptable if the nationality status of the holder is British subject by birth.

• Is there an emergency service for OCI?
  =>No. The standard processing time of OCI application is 45 working days after acknowledgement. Appropriate visa should be applied for in case of emergencies. It is therefore advised NOT to book travel tickets before the E-OCI is issued.

• I am an E-OCIholder. What documents should I carry while travelling to India?
  => Valid foreign passport and E-OCI are the only documents required for travel to India, apart, of course, from the air ticket.

• Can I travel to India immediately after applying for E-OCI with an Indian Embassy / Consulate?

=> Yes, you can travel after obtaining an appropriate visa. However, it is advisable to check the status of the OCI application before applying for visa. Status can be checked on https://ociservices.gov.in

• Can a person holding more than one nationality apply for OCI?
  => Yes.

• Is an E-OCI holder entitled to apply for an Indian passport and will the E-OCI holder lose his existing citizenship

=> No. OCI scheme should not be confused with Indian citizenship. Indian passports can be granted only to Indian nationals and rules do not allow for dual nationality. E-OCI holder will therefore NOT lose his existing citizenship.

• Can an E-OCI holder undertake Research work / mountaineering / missionary activities / journalism and visit to Restricted / Protected areas in India?

=> Yes but only after obtaining necessary approval of the competent authorities in India.

• Can E-OCI be surrendered / renounced?

=> Yes. The cardholder has to declare his / her intention to renounced on Form XXXI to the Indian Mission / Post where OCI Registration was granted. Application form for this purpose may be requested by email at cons1.santiago@mea.gov.in.

• I have a PIO card; do I need to apply for OCI?

=> Yes. The PIO card scheme has been withdrawn and all PIO cardholders are advised to convert their PIO cards to E-OCIs.

• Whether foreign military / police personnel either serving or retired / civil Govt. servant working in Ministry of Defence as IT engineer / civil contractor is entitled for OCI?

=> No.

• Would the civil / criminal laws be applicable to persons registered as OCI?
  => Yes.

• What are the consequences of furnishing wrong information and suppressing material information while applying for OCI?
  => Furnishing wrong information or suppressing material information while applying for OCI will result in rejection of the application or if E-OCI is already issued, will result in cancellation of the same as per Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The person will also be blacklisted, thereby banning his entry into India.

• Can a person register as an OCI be granted Indian citizenship
  =>Yes. As per provisions of section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act 1955, a person who is registered as an OCI for 5 years and has resided in India for one year out of those five years is eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. However, it is reiterated that India does not provide for dual citizenship and the person will have to renounce his foreign citizenship before getting Indian citizenship.
