Surrender Certificate
The Indian Citizenship Act does not provide for dual citizenship. Under the Passports Act, all Indian passport holders must surrender their last Indian passport to the nearest Embassy or Consulate immediately after acquiring a foreign nationality. It is an offence under Indian law for foreign nationals to hold an Indian passport once they have acquired foreign nationality.
Once the Indian passport is surrendered, the Embassy cancels it and returns it to the holder with a Surrender Certificate. The Embassy cannot provide services such as OCI or visa until the Surrender Certificate is submitted.
Renunciation Declaration Certificate
This certificate is granted to those who have misplaced or lost their last Indian passport and therefore cannot surrender it for cancellation. It is issued on submission of a sworn affidavit on the loss of the Indian passport and other required documents.
Either a Surrender Certificate or a Renunciation Declaration Certificate must be submitted with an OCI or visa application.
