Tourist Visa

For recreation, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, short yoga programmes, short medical treatment and short courses.

A person of Indian origin who does not have an OCI card, and the spouse and children of such a person, should apply for an Entry Visa instead of a Tourist Visa, as it has far fewer restrictions.

About the Tourist Visa

For recreation, sightseeing, a casual visit to meet friends or relatives, a short-term yoga programme, short-duration medical treatment including treatment under Ayush systems (other than pre-planned treatment), short-term courses in local languages, music, dance, arts and crafts, cooking, medicine etc. that are not formal or structured (not exceeding 6 months and without a qualifying certificate or diploma), and voluntary work of short duration (up to one month, without any payment or consideration in return), and no other purpose. Also for foreign nationals coming for mountaineering expeditions.

  • A Tourist Visa may be granted for up to 5 years, but the maximum continuous stay on each visit is 90 days. Tourist visas are non-extendable and non-convertible except in limited circumstances.
  • The requirement of a two-month gap between two visits on a tourist visa has been removed for most countries, including Chile.
  • A foreigner coming to India on any type of visa may also do the activities permitted under a Tourist Visa.
  • Persons travelling to India on a cruise ship should obtain a Tourist Visa in advance, write “Cruise Trip to India” in bold at the top of the application, and request double, triple or multiple entries depending on the number of Indian ports.
  • PIOs may consider applying for an OCI card, which gives lifelong visa-free travel to India.
